Remember watching Pee-Wee’s Playhouse as a child? I sure do — that talking chair will forever haunt my dreams. Well, now you can reclaim those bygone days by scoring the newly launched “Pee-wee Herman Show” badge on Foursquare.
Pee-Wee seems to be taking to the New York streets today, checking in everywhere from the iconic Katz’s Deli to City Hall (about 20 stops) in order to meet with fans and help them score his badge, which you can unlock by friending Pee-Wee on Foursquare and checking in to two stops that he has visited. The unlock text is as follows:
“Good morning boys and girls! Welcome to the Pee-wee parade! Bring this badge to the Sondheim Theatre box office @ 124 West 43rd and SCREAM REAL LOUD for a surprise from Pee-wee (while supplies last).”
So obviously this Foursquare tie-in was spurred by the premiere of Herman’s new Broadway show, The Pee-wee Herman Show, which will run at Broadway’s Stephen Sondheim Theater October 26 to January 2.
Regardless of intention, people are already a-Twitter about the “parade,” and Pee-Wee is posting scads of pictures on his Facebook Page from his travels — a throwback to the “Traveling Pee-Wee” section of his website, on which he explains that since 1994 he has photographed himself next to landmarks around the world.
What’s next on the agenda? According to his representatives, “After we play HORSE at the cage we’re headed to Highline, then the Apollo, Sylvia’s, a Harlem fire station, and then Apple Store and Jacob the Jeweler!”
Although the idea of celebs on Foursquare isn’t exactly new — MTV had a go at that with The Jersey Shore — we like the community/meetup aspect of this campaign.
Do you think this “parade” will help Herman’s Broadway show take off?
