Instagram Now Seeing Two to Three Photo Uploads Per Second

The popular mobile photo-sharing app Instagram is now seeing two to three photo uploads per second, according to co-founder Kevin Systrom.

The application is just barely two months old and is still restricted to the iPhone, making that figure all the more remarkable.

Systrom is also quick to point out that Instagram activity is not restricted to the tech-centric San Francisco Bay Area. “Only 4% of photos shared are taken within the bay area — the large majority are spread all around the world with cities making up only a fraction. We’re seeing growth just about everywhere outside of the tech world,” he says.

Previously, Instagram reported 100,000 users in its first week post launch. The startup is now said to be close to the 1 million mark, which is why Mashable’s Editor-In-Chief Adam Ostrow has named it one of the most promising companies to have emerged this year.
