Apple’s mobile video editing app iMovie, officially supported only by iPhone 4, can easily be hacked to run on an iPhone 3GS.
The simple hack requires a jailbroken iPhone 3GS and a couple of simple edits to Apple’s .ipa file for iMovie. The instructions for the hack were originally published (but then retracted, as it breaks Apple’s TOS) by Redmond Pie.
It’s easy enough to find the explanation for this hack if you want to try it out, and you can see it in action in the video below.
However, what makes the hack really interesting is the fact that it’s so simple. iMovie works perfectly fine on the iPhone 3GS, but Apple decided to make it iPhone 4-only. Why?
Apple would probably argue that the iPhone 3GS’ slower CPU and smaller amount of memory (256 MB vs. iPhone 4’s 512 MB) make the iMovie experience sub-par on the older device. Another explanation could be that Apple felt the iPhone 4 didn’t really have that many advantages over its older sibling, and thus decided to make iMovie exclusive to iPhone 4 to give it an extra “feature”. Whichever it is, iPhone 3GS owners who don’t mind hacking their devices can now enjoy the app without investing in a new iPhone 4.
